Often times we create sayings, words, acronyms, etc. here at New.Band.Day. It helps us categorize what’s happening out there and though we may be sarcastic, they’re always one maverick that leads the charge. This is our book of sayings, we’re claiming them and we’re addressing sarcasm here and here only. If you like it, have one of your own, please submit it and tell us. Thanks for reading.

The Ark: A place for those animal named bands to reside. Some would call The Animals the Noah of this so-called Ark, but it’s only within the past 3 years we’ve seen bands named Grizzly Bear, Fleet Foxes, SeaBear, Animal Collective, Caibou, Tame Impala, Bear in Heaven, The Mountain Goats, etc.

The Hibernators: These are the bands that name themselves after the mammal family of Ursidae, the Bear family. Over 892 bands show up under a MySpace Music search, or 53 on iTunes. Just to name a few: Grizzly Bear, Panda Bear, Sea Bear, Bear in Heaven, the father of them all Minus the Bear. Don’t forget the bearly famous Art Bears or Big Bear.

Inukshukian: These are bands that are invited to our Canadian music festival. The festival being aptly named Inukshuk. What is an Inukshuk, well it’s a stone landmark or cairn built by humans, used by the Inuit, Inupiat, Kalaallit, Yupik, and other peoples of the Arctic region of North America. These structures are found from Alaska to Greenland. This region, above the Arctic Circle, is dominated by the tundra biome, containing areas with few natural landmarks. Canadians are the first known settlers of these regions and they claim them be the first outposts of the Arctic Region. Canadian bands now can claim they are Inukshuks, guiding musical tastes around the world.

Laney Boggs: She’s that girl that’s always there for you. The one you take for granted. The one that cushions the fall when the trampy hot chick dumps you. That’s right the one girl that when she removes her glasses you realize, damn She is All That. Laney Boggs defines so many bands that get ignored because of all the hot ones being featured on Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, Stereogum, etc. They’re the ones that work their ass off but don’t get the recognition. But when you stop, plug in your headphones and just listen, they are even better then the ones that get the attention. We love you Laney Boggs and all of you bands that need the support.

The Pet Sound: For those bands that are following the melodic, layered vocal, spacey sound of The Beach Boys Pet Sounds record released May 16, 1966. That’s over 40 years ago and bands are just now realizing that it’s an incredible sound. The biggest Pet Sounders…Grizzly Bear, Animal Collective, Panda Bear etc.

Rawsome: Awesome + Rad = Rawsome it’s the outcome of California psych-rock. Bands that fit this bill, Lord Huron, The Donkeys, The Fresh & Onlys, etc. Love the saying and it will be used often.

Stupid Good: Come on, you’re really reading this definition. Literally it means, it so stupid that we haven’t given this a chance, or that we’re so stupid for not having discovered this already. Either way it’s stupid to not have coined this earlier and I’m stupid, to be 200 characters having to define this for you. Start using and give me a little wink every time you use it. Used in a sentence: “I had a Stupid Good time tonight. Let’s do it again”

XX/XY: It’s Girl/Boy duos. It’s the best of music. Acoustic guitars, birds chirping, we’re in love, we break up and now we’re back together. Create a cool band name, buy a drum machine, make t-shirts, get into a SXSW showcase, make the Facebook page and you’re in. There are so many good ones, and bad ones, but only a few make NBD.

EDITOR PICKS: FINAL WORDS ON 2012, THE BEST TRACKS FROM RE & 2013 PREDICTIONS

Our Editor, Father Time is tossing out 2012 and saying hello to 2013

Our Editor, Father Time is tossing out 2012 and saying hello to 2013

EDITOR PICKS: FINAL WORDS ON 2012 AND THE BEST ALBUMS AND TRACKS FROM RE

God thank you for the end of 2012. We survived another apocalyptic prediction, guns killing people and another visceral election. But enough with the real world, the music industry saw another year of deaths. We said goodbye to Dave Brubeck, Das Racist and essentially The Beasties. Rest in Peace Adam “MCA” Yauch (1964-2012). Let’s cheer this up a bit, we also said hello to Spotify in the US, the best new artists and the Indie becoming ironically mainstream. It was truly the year that the major label was put to bed. What do they provide any way? Distribution, please anyone can upload a track to Bandpage or Soundcloud. Marketing, come on we run this blog on pure passion and we get more traffic than Kings of Leon’s Facebook page. It’s done, it’s over, say hello to the powerful Mr. Indie, he will be your gatekeeper of the future.

As far as music. Trends that died:
1. Bands named after animals, see our Ark comment.
2. Vocals without electronics…yep
3. Drummers
4. Indies being Indies. Alabama Shakes and The Lumineers topping charts…wow.

Trends that took off:
1. Folk is the shit, see The Lumineers (The highest charting indie track of all time)
2. The record release from so called dead bands, see The XX, Clinic oh and a My Bloody Valentine record coming in 2013
3. The female leads, see Jessie Ware, Class Actress, Beach House, Alabama Shakes, etc.
5. Mainstreaming of Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All…wow they’re like the North Carolina of music. The greatest rap draft picks come from Odd Future see Tyler the Creator, Frank Ocean…
4. Sophomore releases from our faves, Tennis, Best Coast, Sleigh Bells, etc.

So we close this year with one final statement to all those bands out there…
KEEP WRITING SONGS
KEEP RECORDING BECAUSE WE ARE ALL STILL LISTENING.
Music is not dead, just the business of selling it.
KEEP CREATING AND WE WILL KEEP SHARING Fight on!

Bitch is back — Band of the Day (6.20.11) Sun Airway

20 Jun

Sun Airway is to music as beer is to summer...f'n perfect!

Band of the Day (6.20.11)

We’re buried in bands and electronically buried in MP3s. So many tracks, bands and albums to wade through, we really don’t know where to start. Arizona Turk had a mild stroke with our hiatus, but we’re back and the bitch is ready to burst with some tracks and bands that will blow your mind. Let’s begin with our schedule for this week. Starting tomorrow we will be counting down the Top 10 Band of 2011…SO FAR. We’re also celebrating our 1 year anniversary so as a gift to our loyal readers, we’re “Giving You the Bird”…literally, the playlist for download. Let us know your email and the playlist will be in your inbox. Happy listening and thank you for being here for the ride.

Our Band of the Day Today is Sun Airway. If you’ve followed our little blog since 2010, you’ll know we had a little band crush on Lord Huron. Actually we still do…but he’s so big now, we’ve sent him off to the masses for their enjoyment. A happy graduation of sorts. We compared Huron to the layered “Pet Sound” for the Little Mermaidians. That oceanic version of Animal Collective. Well Sun Airway is like being on the ship that sails over Lord Huron’s underwater dream. Click here to hear a little Huron. Sun Airway is the comfortable pun intended blanket of sunshine that envelopes you when you hear great summer tunes. It’s relaxing layered psych pop that makes for a great Saturday afternoon in the heat of summer. I love Sun Airway and they will hopefully get past the hipster union and make a name for themselves. Enjoy the tracks below, because we’re in love…again.

Vitals:
Hometown: Philadelphia-based project
Members: ex-A-Sides Patrick Marsceill and Jon Bathmus
Sonic Soulmates: Lord Huron, Animal Collective, Here We Go Magic (Featured on NBD 3.25.10)
Trackables:
“Waiting On You” – Love the summer sound

“Oh, Naoko” – From their original EP, and as Pet Soundy as you can get. Great track

“Swallowed By The Night” – Here is my description…the soundtrack to a bearded hipster Carnival Cruise line to Ensenada

Band of the Day (3.9.11) The Answering Machine

9 Mar

Manchester heroes might just have their moment with Lifeline - The Answering Machine

Band of the Day (3.9.11) The Answering Machine

The boys and one gal from Manchester have been creating music since their days at the University of Manchester, circa 2005. Martin and Pat wrote songs together in their final year at university, and Gemma joined on bass shortly afterwards. Do they qualify for a Laney Boggs award? Yes they do, having worked their tails off touring, releasing several albums and capturing a fairly large following along the way, but still haven’t had their moment in the sun. It’s really the release of Lifeline, that’s catapulted them into a stardom, though it still does irritate me that labels can’t break a British act in the US. Why the hell can’t they. The Answering Machine are part The Radio Dept., the vocal soulmate of Bloc Party’s Kele Okereke and whole lot of bell ringing and melodies from Sparklehorse or Los Campesinos!

Vitals:
Hometown: Manchester, England, UK
Members:
Martin Colclough
Pat Fogarty
Gemma Evans
Ben Perry
Sonic Soulmate: The Radio Dept., Bloc Party, Sparklehorse, Los Campesinos!
Trackables:
“Hospital Lung” – A good quick little Bloc Party ditty from The Answering Machine

“Video 8” – The Radio Deptish track

“Lifeline’ – Title track and it captures the best of the band. Great work here.

Band of the Day 2.10.11 The Dodos

10 Feb

The Dodos Finally Finally Finally have a 4th LP

Band of the Day 2.10.11 THE DoDoS

Here again we have another case of a Laney Boggs band. Curious what a Laney Boggs band is? Well Freddie Prinze Jr. and Rachael Leigh Cook in She’s All That should answer that question. The teen romance story where your best friend of the opposite sex listens to you rant all night long about your horrible relationship, then in one moment you realize, “Damn she is really hottttt.” Maybe she removed her glasses, or got dressed up for prom, whatever it is, it’s a classic story and The Dodos are a perfect fit. The SF duo of Meric Long and Logan Kroeber have been trolling the small venues since 2005, playing gigs, putting out 3 LPs, 2008’s Visiter was very good, and it took their single “Black Knight” to make us realize how amazing they truly are. It’s simple drum guitar beat is great, but the vocals remind me of 2005 faves Born Ruffians or last year’s Morning Benders. The guitar slapping at the end reminds me of “Cherub Rock” by the Pumpkins, but it’s the whole package that makes this track great. I love this track and from what has slipped into my Inbox…the album is going to be huge. The album No Color is slated for March 15th and is rumored to have guest appearances from Neko Case, etc. The Dodos should be on your radar, and SXSW may be their Prom dress.

Vitals for The Dodos:
Hometown: San Francisco, CA, USA
Members: Meric Long, Logan Kroeber
Sonic Soulmates: Born Ruffians, Morning Benders, Smashing Pumpkins, The Kooks, Arctic Monkeys
Must Hear Tracks:
“Black Night” – Really might be my favorite track of 2011 so far. Gotta listen to it.

“Winter” – From the Visiter record and it’s shows their depth.

Band of the Day (1.17.11) Pepper Rabbit

17 Jan

Pepper Rabbit is our Laney Boggs

Pepper Rabbit is our Laney Boggs

Band of the Day (1.17.11) Pepper Rabbit

New album alert from one of the big buzzes of 2010. Not that we weren’t watching, we were distracted. Well a secret little friend of mine sent a new track, can’t post it yet, but it’s brilliant. Then I went back and re-listened to Beauregard and I realized, F#$K, I didn’t give Pepper Rabbit what they deserved…A HUMMINGBIRD. Wow, it was a great record and they deserved our love here at NBD. We apologize for the lack of recognition. It’s like that girl…you’re friends..you talk to her about the empty souled hot blond twit. She tells you that the blond is a bitch. You ignore her for a year, the blond breaks your heart by hooking up with your best friend, then as you’re embracing that helpful friend, she removes her glasses and you realize, wow, she was sitting right next to you the whole time. Not that we’re re-writing another teen romantic comedy, but you are our Laney Boggs…who is Laney Boggs you ask? Well Freddie Prinze Jr. and Rachael Leigh Cook in She’s All That should answer that question. Laney Boggs just made our Glossary….

I know they’ll be in our final year’s list when the new album is released. They’ve reached that moment for us…The moment when you realize that that band is THAT band. Not one of the bunch, but the band that will be remembered. Listen with love to the haunting, yet ironically upbeat tunes of LA’s Pepper Rabbit.

Vitals:
Hometown: Silverlake CA
Members: Xander Singh + Luc Laurent
Sonic Soulmates: Grizzly Bear, The Pet Sound, Nurses, Animal Collective
Label: Kanine Records
Must Hear Tracks:
“Harvest Moon” – From Beauregard and probably the best track from it.

“Babette!” – It was 2:00am and I re-listened to the track, and I thought….”thank you for taking off your glasses” haha

Best New Bands of 2010 Hummingbird Award: #13 Tennis

13 Dec

Best New Bands of 2010 Hummingbird Award: #13 Tennis

They’re the husband and wife, Patrick Riley and Alaina Moore, duo from Denver, CO. They bought a boat, sailed the Atlantic Coast and wrote beautiful songs. They define our XX/XY duos. It’s Hemingway meets Buffet, meets Vampire Weekend, meets 50′s bubblegum pop. I love the blend of the organ and her eerily timeless vocals. They are so fantastic and the more songs we hear, the more we know they will be bigger than big.

Vitals:
Hometown: Denver, CO
Members: Patrick Riley and Alaina Moore
Sonic Soulmates: The xx, Vampire Weekend, Dusty Springfield

#18 Hummingbird Award – Gamble House

Gamble House is what rock has become. Clean guitars, layered vocals and whole lot of So. Cal vibe. I love Grizzly Bear and the like…but there’s something clever and simple that Gamble House provides that I miss when I’m listening to the others. Maybe it’s the California plucking harmonies, no matter what it is, these guys deserve the love and that’s why they are #18 on our Hummingbird award list. The 18th best new band of 2010. Thanks boys.

Band of the Day (11.22.10) Memoryhouse

22 Nov

BOD (11.22.10) Memoryhouse

With the success of Florence and The Machine, there will be a slew of new female led, drama queens hitting the scene. Unfortunately, every single one will be compared to the “Oh I wish I was Siouxsie Sioux” vocals standards. I think our team at NBD has profiled at least 60 bands that I would consider far more inventive and stylish to that of Florence. Today is definitely one of those days.

Memoryhouse is so good, she actually gave me chills the first time I listened. I love The xx for one reason, it’s that simple solo guitar that intros Romy Madley Croft’s vocals. I find that so alluring and it really draws the emotion of the vocals. Memoryhouse is Guelph, Ontario’s Evan Abeele, classically trained and Denise Nouvion’s photographic mind, melded together to form a soulful Beach House/My Bloody Valentine. They don’t conjure sadness, but rather a sense of passion. They make me want to create. Their simple electronic drum beats never seem Yacht-like, or campy, they are better than The xx and I think you’ll find their music a great accompaniment to the blustery winter weather. Denise’s voice will warm your heart as your bearing the snowy winter doldrums. I think we’ll add them to the mainstage of our Inukshuk Festival

Hear:
“Sleep Patterns” – Simple guitars, electronic drum beats and Denise’s beautiful vocals.

“To The Lighthouse” – My favorite song off the EP and I really think it will make our 2010 Top 10…lovely tracks.

Band of the Day (9.17.10) Gamble House

17 Sep You will never forget them

BOD (9.17.10) Gamble House

Grizzly Bear sonic twins, Gamble House, hail from the heart of Silverlake, CA. Yeah it took Ben Becker’s stint at NYU to create this masterpiece, but the move to LA solidified them as true rock stars. They are rockers at heart, with clean guitars, classic vocals that rival Animal Collective, Fleet Foxes and Grizzly Bear. I am fan, because they are classically California and they maintain their own sound. Yeah they have The Pet Sound, but they pull at your heartstring in a way you don’t get from the other PSers. Ben Becker, Keith Karman, Ben Cassorla and Brian Mclaughlin make up the sound of Gamble House. They deserve to be signed and they deserve the accolades. Listen to “Bonny Doon” only because the song is beautiful and I love that part of the Santa Cruz Mountains. It’s up there by Boulder Creek and if you have time see a show at The Brookdale. It’s very memorable. See them on tour with Rogue Wave and get these dudes a label deal, they deserve it!!!

Band of the Day (9.15.10) Keep Shelly in Athens

15 Sep

BOD: (9.15.10) Keep Shelly in Athens

I first stumbled on Keep Shelly in Athens (KSIA) from another BOD Danniel Radall. He shares the same love that I have for the downtempo, electronic mastery that RΠЯ and Sarah P. deliver. They are a XX/XY mystery Grecian duo and they truly call Athens home. Their sound is a blend of hardcore downtempo maestros like Kruder and Dorfmeister and modern day pack leaders like Air. I think you’ll enjoy these unusually warm Fall nights with a little KSIA. Here are two tracks for you to enjoy:

Band of the Day (9.13.10) Candy Claws

13 Sep

Band of the Day (9.13.10) Candy Claws

Fort Collins, CO is home to Colorado State University and also touts it’s 36,000 acres of open space. I dug deeper and discovered that Fort Collins was voted the #1 Best Place to Reinvent Your Life: AARP Magazine – May & June 2003 edition. Then I got it, it all clicked. I stumbled on Candy Claws from one of the many fave music blogs out there a few months back. I grabbed a few MP3’s and listened and didn’t know what to make of them. They’re spacey, airy and fresh. I felt good after hearing their music. Especially the single, “Sunbeam Show” it just did me right. It brought that open airy feeling and covered me like a waterfall of sound. Refreshing and a great sound to reinvent a genre. Candy Claws hails from Fort Collins, CO and it’s so obvious that the fresh mountain air has inspired their sound. I love these guys and I think they have the depth to influence the Animal Collective/Fleet Foxes crowd. They’ve upped the ante on the core “Pet Sounders” and they’ve added something, it’s a freedom of sound. It’s not repetitive, it doesn’t harmonize with itself, it sounds a bit more free and I think you’ll agree.

Hear:
“Sunbeam Show”

“Silent Time on Earth”

Someone might want to tell these guys that they have to split royalties. Here is the council of Candy Claws:
Band Members:
Kay – singing, samples
Ryan – singing, sounds
Marty – guitars
Riley – bass
Jonathan – keyboards
Meghan – keyboards
McKenzie – percussion
Wesley – drums
Karen – Mountain
Sarabeth – Mountain
Celeste – Voice of the Jungle Princess

Band of the Day (8.20.10) Gauntlet Hair

20 Aug

BOD (8.20.10) Gauntlet Hair

Lafayette, CO is not the original home of South Park, no it’s the official birthplace of your new favorite band Gauntlet Hair. Andy R. and Craig Nice, who began making music together when they were 15, seem to have found a groove and we are so very lucky to be able to hear their success. They have The Pet Sound, but they are so much better than the others who attempt it. They are two guys who make layered guitars sound amazing because they add ummmph. Yeah, they make music with power, not sleeping pills. I think they’ve created a whole new approach to today’s sound. They have more of a New Wave approach then the Animal Collective bunch, which gives them an early U2 Boy sound. At first sound, they really have a sonic similarity to Surfer Blood, but there seems to be more depth and I think you’ll be glad you came to NBD today. I’m so glad I stumbled on these guys, because I think you’ll love em. Give em a whirl down below.

Hear:
“I Was Thinking” – I’ve read a good load of blogs about GH and it’s alarming how many people love this track. I admit it’s pretty darn good.
