Best New Bands of 2010 Hummingbird Award: #13 Tennis

13 Dec

Best New Bands of 2010 Hummingbird Award: #13 Tennis

They’re the husband and wife, Patrick Riley and Alaina Moore, duo from Denver, CO. They bought a boat, sailed the Atlantic Coast and wrote beautiful songs. They define our XX/XY duos. It’s Hemingway meets Buffet, meets Vampire Weekend, meets 50′s bubblegum pop. I love the blend of the organ and her eerily timeless vocals. They are so fantastic and the more songs we hear, the more we know they will be bigger than big.

Vitals:
Hometown: Denver, CO
Members: Patrick Riley and Alaina Moore
Sonic Soulmates: The xx, Vampire Weekend, Dusty Springfield
Track of the Year:
“Marathon”

Band of the Day (11.3.10) Bankrobber

3 Nov

BOD: (11.3.10) Bankrobber

It’s not a coincidence that Victoria’s Bankrobber shares the band name with The Clash’s famous track of the same name. The band shares the same diversity of sound and a sonic similarity with its vocals. Bankrobber has stumbled on a sound that is a step ahead of Vampire Weekend. I’ve only heard their BandCamp EP and I think these guys are the real deal. They may need to work on their harmonies a bit, but overall their songwriting is good, the arrangements are GREAT and the music has massive appeal. I love when they get folksy and add the reggae kick. Listen to their folk flavor, with banjos. Bankrobber is Blank, or just Jordan Minkoff if you want to go with the birth name. The five song EP MidJuly is available here.

Hear:
“May 11th” – Try not to tap your toe.

“Tripe” – Clash as Clash gets…love it though! Put Vampire Weekend and Clash in the studio and this is what you get!

Band of the Day – (6.29.10) TENNIS

29 Jun Mixed doubles anyone?

BOD (6.29.10) Tennis – The husband wife duo Patrick Riley and Alaina Moore, no not the former Laker coach, but the lead captain of this brilliant masterpiece of a band. The two decided to test their newly formed union, packed their duffles, left Denver, bought a boat and sailed the high seas of the North Atlantic. As their bond solidified, they discovered that a musical journal of their journey would be both hip and interesting. This travelogue is for our enjoyment and listening pleasure. It’s a Hemingway meets Buffet, meets Vampire Weekend, meets 50’s bubblegum pop. I love the blend of the organ and her eerily timeless vocals.

This impossible to Google band finds itself with only a lone MySpace page. visit it
