Being #1 has it’s privileges. Meet the best artist of 2013 Bill Ryder-Jones

Best New Bands of 2013 HUMMINGBIRD AWARD #1: Bill Ryder-Jones

My heart always fall for the silky voices that sing about love lost. Especially when they come out of the shadows. Much like Diane Coffee’s falsetto or our #1 Best New Artist Bill Ryder-Jones. Where Diane Coffee’s day job is the drummer for Foxygen, Bill Ryder-Jones played second fiddle, or lead guitar, for the Coral. Who knew what love skeletons hid in Ryder-Jones’ gut as he was plucking away on “Pass It On”, my favorite Coral track. He barely qualifies for our best NEW artist, with several solo scores and a 2011 LP If…, but gliding along the fog of obscurity shouldn’t punish his hard work and tenacity. He kept writing and in early 2013, he recorded an LP of perfection A Bad Wind Blows in My Heart. His deep passion for Nick Drake sweetens the sound of the record and a depth of music know-how really shines through as he orchestrates his way across 11 beautiful tracks. We may not find Ryder-Jones on the Top 40 lists like that of other bands on our Hummingbird list, but you will find this record on my shelf, empty sleeve, with record spinning over and over again sharing it amongst all my friends. This surely isn’t our first singer songwriter earning the #1 Hummingbird Award. Not sure who I would prefer on a cold wintry night Bill Ryder-Jones or Kristian Mattson’s Tallest Man on Earth. Either way this is what makes music great. One man, one guitar and a pain in his heart.

We love the music and we hope you do too.

Best New Bands of 2013 HUMMINGBIRD AWARD #2: London Grammar

The Turk is gonna have a small seizure when he sees this post. That’s right I unilaterally changed the vote for #1 new artist. That’s right, the Hummingbirds are my passion, although inspired daily by the Arizona Turk. After going through the votes and re-listening again and again to the top 5, I just felt London Grammar was #2. If you don’t know them by now, then you will very soon. London Grammar is as good as Florence and the Machine and she even reminds us of the power of Annie Lennox. Most of you, who think you are on the hipster’s cutting edge, once listened and enjoyed Florence. You also enjoyed The Lumineers and I bet you even have Coldplay Parachutes on CD because you just can’t part with it. It’s fine these bands all start with you and your passion and end up in stadiums and marrying A-list actresses. We don’t really care, we just love finding new artists. I think London Grammar will be as big as Florence and many will compare her to the younger Eurythmics Annie Lennox, because female leads are smashingly successful and Hannah is that good. With Florence it’s just her vocals, the music is so so. With London Grammar, Hannah Reid is just as talented, but the guitars, electronics and Dot Major’s mixes and the producing supporting her bring me to tears every time I listen to it. London Grammar will be your soundtrack for love lost. It’s a heart wrenching record and we love it for that reason. Thank you guys!

Best New Bands of 2013 HUMMINGBIRD AWARD #11: Holy Milk

When I say ambient female led London bands you say what? Imogen Heap, Goldfrapp or this year’s yet again darling Bat for Lashes. That’s fine, none of those three bands shifted the universe with their music, but they made a name for themselves. Holy Milk isn’t your typical ambient artist looking to make a name for themselves with that one poppy track that will show up with an oozing iPhone 5C, they’re dark and eerie, potentially haunting my daydreams. I fall in love with voices, but not easily. Lucinda John-Durante is soothing and she’s a siren that could lure me to do very dangerous things. I’m looking forward to a big 2014 from Holy Milk. No one has ever punished us for rewarding potential.

The wind is mild for The Paper Kites

The wind is mild for The Paper Kites

Some very good music hitting the streets this fourth quarter. Not that there hasn’t been great music all year long, but with the anticipation of Arcade Fires Afterlife, more music is hitting our InBox then we’ve seen all year long.

Here are some nuggets for your ears:

UNCORKINGS:
The Paper Kites – Folky and nice on the ears for a late fall evening. These Melbournistos are marvelous and with only two EPs and a solid LP, they are poised for greatness. From WIKI -> The band was formed in 2009 by Sam Bentley and Christina Lacy and consists of Bentley, Lacy, Dave Powys, Josh Bentley and Sam Rasmussen

High Highs – More greatness from down under. Love this record. Acoustic wonderment with a touch of love. Listen to “Open Season” High Highs is an indie pop rock band hailing from Sydney, Australia, founded in 2013. From WIKI -> It was co-founded by vocalist Jack Milas and Oli Chang, with Zach Lipkins playing drums. Their song “Open Season” was featured in a commercial for Pacifico beer.

Our Record of the Year so Far:
Yuck – Glow and Behold ::: The record reminds me of everything great in 1993. They’ve captured the edge of Dinosaur Jr, the melodic dual guitars of the Pumpkins, the innocence of Teenage Fanclub and even an edge of Temple of the Dog. I don’t know how they’ve done it, but they captured it all in one record. Can’t tell you how happy I am when I listen to this record.
Listen to Middle Sea, then buy the vinyl. We’ve loved this band since 2010!! Read this

The Best New Band of 2012 HUMMINGBIRD AWARD #1: TOY

There is no better band in the land for 2012. Toy will be an amazing rock fixture for years to come.

There is no better band in the land for 2012. Toy will be an amazing rock fixture for years to come.

Best New Bands of 2012 HUMMINGBIRD AWARD #1: TOY

This was an insane voting process, so democratic, then BOOM the big guy takes control and pulls a dictatorship on the NBD staff and just votes in TOY as the best new band of 2012. Why?:
1. They are the best rock band of 2012, hell the best band of 2012.
2. They actually wrote an album that held together over 12 tracks
3. Like Maiden and Black Sabbath before them, Toy is able to create diversity, a 4 minute rock anthem followed by an 8 minute mini novel, similar to an album like Powerslave with “Aces High” then “Rime of the Ancient Mariner”
4. Nobody but nobody has re-created a record like A Storm in Heaven from The Verve. Did you know that The Verve was an airy, dreamy rock band with layered guitars or did you just know them from “Bittersweet Symphony”?
5. They will become popular from their softer side hear “My Heart Skips a Beat”, but we hope they don’t abandon their rock DNA hear “Lose My Way”

You’re probably asking, “Seriously New.Band.Day, Toy is better than Grimes, Jessie Ware, The Lumineers, etc.?” we would say “Thank you for the comment passionate kind reader. Absolutely, Toy is much better, they dare to tackle a rock genre that is for most parts dead. They don’t beat around the bush hear their opening track and they sure as hell aren’t going to follow the trend of going all folk on us.” I love when our readers write us. Toy is our #1 Hummingbird of 2012. God it feels good to get that of our chests. I think the Turk and the Muse will be sending me hate letters for the next six months, but don’t worry, they will have their unsolicited time to share their picks tomorrow see their 2011 and 2010 picks.

Best New Bands of 2012 HUMMINGBIRD AWARD #3: JESSIE WARE
I am struggling with this pick. Really and truly, I actually think Jessie Ware is the #1 Best New Artist of 2012, but I also think that Alabama Shakes and The Lumineers made their impact in 2012. Here is the rub, they really don’t need our help here at NBD. Not that it makes our list any less legit, but I’m not handing out Grammy’s here. This isn’t about record sales, this is about a band that will withstand the test of time and be there in 10 years. I don’t think the Lumineers will be there and Alabama Shakes needs some song-writing and arrangement help. The album got a little tedious and didn’t exploit her voice like it should have. So that’s why our list DOESN’T include those two super chart busters. Jessie Ware should be #1 in any other year, but frankly #2 and #1 are just a hair strand better in our minds. We love Jessie’s production quality, her danceable mood driven tracks and her ode to 80’s stylistic sounds like Lisa Stansfield to make her our second favorite female lead of the year. We love Jessie Ware and we know she will not be going away any time soon.

I like what we said back in March, “I’m in love with Rose, have been since her 2010 LP. Not only is she quite hot but the new EP that hit my Inbox back in January has me stirring. The Distractions who accompany Ms. Dougall are shoegazey with such great guitar riffs i feel like I’m listening to My Vitriol or early Cure. Her lyrics and Hope Sandovalish voice are emotional and alluring. The two together sound like The Sundays discovering Teenage Fanclub.” I’m still in love with her and I hope that the world reads this post and gives her the credit she deserves.

November ’12 Picks — The Perfect Playlist for the End of Times

14 Nov

Doomsday Delights…the final list of music for the end of times.

Mayan calendars, apocalyptic weather patterns, locusts, temple completion. Oh it’s all coming down to 12/21/12 So let’s enjoy it with new music. Here are our top 10 bands, albums and what nots to make our November list or the last 30 days of our existence a memorable one. The perfect playlist of new bands for the end of times. Too bad these bands won’t make it past our little blog…or will they:

#10 –> April Maze
Melbourne duo, touring since ’10. Perfect Sad music for when you think back on the missed opportunities, the love lost, investment’s gaffed, etc. April Maze will be your last cigarette type moment. The new album is Two

#9 –> Dwntwn
When you want to dance in the streets with no clothes on…I know I’m going hear this band on Gossip Girl at some gala event to celebrate Blair’s new clothing line. Dwntwn’s new EP The Red Room

#8 –> The Vaccines
They go in the “BECAUSE WE WERE RIGHT” category. No band we were more sure about, well maybe Mumford, but The Vaccines new record Come of Age spills over with Johnny Rotten vocals and a soundtrack moment for the one last revenge eff. You know the one that got away, the one that dumped you HARD. Your cure is here. Needle up “All In Vain” and give her a call.

#7 –> Jonathan Boulet
This is the soundtrack to overthrow the final vestiges of your leadership. The song you have pumping in the car when you finally tell authority to eat shit. Possibly my favorite record of 2012! “You’re An Animal” is the song that should be played! Another band from down under. New record is titled We keep the beat Found the sound See the need Start the heart

#6 –> Darren Hayman and the Long Parliament
If you want to impress her or him by addressing the dinner party with your deep dark knowledge of the Essex Witch Trials which took place during the English Civil War, then spend the time with Darren Hayman’s Violence. It’s a considered listen and it will definitely give you a leg up and the “End of Times Dinner Gala”. Who knows we might all be considered witches and this is a guide to avoid your own persecution.

#5 –> Clinic
Are we supposed to care about bands from 1997 when the world is about to end..Hell yes we are, especially when Free Reign is their best record since 2002. Liverpool’s Clinic is the music playing while you question your life choices, you say to yourself “Why didn’t I do XXXX” you can fill in the blank.

#4 –> The Weeknd
You’re now counting minutes, no not that stupid Justin Timberlake movie In Time, but the real minutes, who knows if you even have electricity left. This is the record that will be playing when the last ounce of oxygen is removed from the planet. Why, because it’s that good that you want to hear it again and again and again and….The Weeknd is Abel Tefsaye of Toronto who was/is about to redefine R&B. Drake and Kanye droool at the feet of The Weeknd. Trilogy is when you pray that this really isn’t the end because you need one more record from this cat.

#3 –> Fear of Men
Man will surely be the reason why the world ends. Something we created, some manufactured food, only God knows. What I do know is that Fear of Men are the BEST BAND OF 2012…Really and truly. Fear of Men are the London/Brighton quartet of Jess Weiss, Dan, Alex and Mike

#2 Crystal Castles
Did someone say endless amounts of drugs because it won’t matter when we’re all dead. Bring on the heroin, the crystal, hell bring on the krokodil tears, ever since I read about that shit in Vice, I really wanted to get my hands on some of that Russian brain melter from Novokuznetsk. So as you drift up to Neverland with Pan and his little people, play the perfect psychotropic soundtrack…Crystal Castles (III). Hell if you can find a boat head to the Nordics and enjoy the grime party.

#1 –> The Walkmen
Only because it’s what I want to listen to on my last day on Earth. It’s the band that perfectly explains my mental maturity. From the youthful rage of “The Rat” to the timeliness of You & Me to the soberness of the new record Heaven. It’s what I want to hear when I reach the pearly gates and need to explain myself to my maker. Just play “Heaven” on repeat until it’s over. The record provides aural courage.

UNCORKED™ – Best New Bands of 2012 (10.14.12) Toy

Phew…we thought this year of rock was going to boil down to Tame Impala and that Nirveatles crap. What a sham…then, oh then we hear Toy and our hearts skipped a beat. Psychadelia from London, makes us think of our Primal Scream days, but I have to say they are better. They have melody and they rock the sh*t of the place. You can get lost in their music like that of early Verve, see “Already There” and then call us and tell how amazing that song is. We beg you to listen to “Dead and Gone” and tell us that you aren’t in love. Oh and they’re on Heavenly Records, a trusted label of quality. We dare you….Thank you.
