Best New Bands of 2012 HUMMINGBIRD AWARD #11: FEAR OF MEN

Really, Fear of Men should be our anthem for 2012. 2012 was our Lillith Fair 2.0. More women leads, more female solo artists and no men, anywhere. Here’s what we said about them in our “Fresh Nectar” report back in November…they made our playlist for the End of Times
“Man will surely be the reason why the world ends. Something we created, some manufactured food, only God knows. What I do know is that Fear of Men are the BEST BAND OF 2012…Really and truly. Fear of Men are the London/Brighton quartet of Jess Weiss, Dan, Alex and Mike” EPs and some great tracks made up their year as we await a full length any day now. we’re now 2 for 2 with female leads. Hummingbird Award #11 - Suuns --- One of the best new bands of 2011

Best New Band of 2011
#11 Hummingbird Award – Suuns
Thank God, Arizona Turk is persistent. We buried his email about Suuns back in 2010 and it was this past February that we finally got our act together and posted. Wow. Really, just one big wow. They’re minimalist, they’re Canadian and they take a lot of inspiration from the likes of Clinic and Thievery Corp. We miss the Turk, where are you but we love Suuns.

Hometown – Montreal, Canada
Members – Ben Shemie, Liam O’Neill, Max Henry, Joseph Yarmush
Sonic Soulmates – MGMT, Clinic, The Besnard Lakes, The Kills, Thievery Corporation with some Beck vocals

Best New Bands of 2010 Hummingbird Award: #11 Karkwa

Best New Bands of 2010 Hummingbird Award: #11 Karkwa

Wow Karkwa created a stir. The Canadian complexity of their sound is followed by a GIGANTIC fan following…oh and they won the Polaris Prize for 2010. We originally profiled the band before they won. American music fans have no idea how incredible music is outside of their borders. We’ve showcased bands from Sweden, Ireland, London, Tokyo, Colombia and of course Canada. But no one band created more buzz this year at New.Band.Day then Karkwa. Their big, complex Rock sound is so good. We love them here in Northern California and we hope the world finds out how great they are.

Hometown: Montreal, CN
