Band of the Day (5.23.11) Seapony

23 May

Seapony are what make music. Spector soul with a lot of dreamy spice.

Band of the Day (5.23.11) Seapony

There was a time last year where all we could talk about at NBD was the power of Tennis. The married Denver couple that sailed the high seas of the Atlantic, wrote amazing songs about inlets and seaports and then crushed it with a fantastic record. We missed that series of knock-offs, that usually follow successful indie trends. Days, months and almost a year went by before we heard a knock-off or at least a band that sounded similarly good. Seapony does the dreamy, female led 50’s pop that made 2010 a great music year. Seapony does that Phil Spector sound so well, you almost forget that you’re listening to contemporary music. The Seattle trio, give us one of our favorite tracks of 2011…so far. You’ll be getting this in your email box if you a fan on Facebook. The album releases on 5/31…pre-order it here. By the way we love them even more for their midwestern roots..Oklahoma and of course Lawrence, KS home to our Music Muse.

Vitals:
Hometown: Seattle, WA
Members: Seapony is songwriter Danny Rowland, singer Jen Weidl, and bass player Ian Brewer
Sonic Soulmates: La Sera, Tennis, Eternal Summers, Emily Haines
Trackables:
“Always” – My fave from these lads…one of our 5 for 11.

“With You” – Tennis served well in 2011. Good solid Spector 50’s pop track

Band of the Day (10.26.10) Now, Now (Now, Now Every Children)

Band of the Day (10.26.10) Now, Now (Now, Now Every Children)

Pleasant female voices over eerie synth/guitar noises make for great music. See Emily Haines, xx, Best Coast, etc. etc. etc. I even like when the guitar player, here it’s Brad Hale, decides to rip into some nice electronic riff. Now, Now formerly Now, Now Every Children (NNEC) is a trio of midwestern lads who have an affection for music a little bit more north of Minneapolis. When I first heard them, I would have placed them in Toronto with the Arts & Crafts label, maybe between Stars and The Dears. Cacie Dalager’s lead vocals enthrall me, she sounds like a meeker, more helpless version of Emily Haines. I want to see her live with an acoustic guitar, no effects at a tiny bar in Tennessee. I think she’d shine without the noise, which to me, makes a great singer. With three EPs, one LP and a whole host of tracks, the band has refined its sound since 2003. The new self-titled EP is nice, it may attempt to be too much, see the appropriately named track “Giants” to hear their attempt at expansiveness. I like them when they’re less expansive and they stick to the trio of sound. Have a listen and be sure to follow them, they will be big.

Band:
Cacie Dalager (vocals, guitar, keyboard); Bradley Hale (drums, backing vocals); Jess Abbott (guitar, vocals); Britty Hale (keyboard) and Christine Sako (bass)

Hear:
“Jesus Camp” – Shows where their headed, now where they’ve been. Stick with this sound and they’ll be HUGER THAN HUGE

Band of the Day (9.30.10) Sambassadeur

30 Sep

BOD: (9.30.10) Sambassadeur

I’m in a female vocalist mood this week. Stumbled on three very good bands led by females this week. Sambassadeur are a Swedish pop band formed in 2003 in Gothenburg actually in Skövde, a much smaller town in Sweden. Anna Persson has a silky voice with a twinge of attitude. The band are signed to the Labrador label, releasing three studio records. Their third album, European, was released in February 2010. I think I’ll call them The Younger Sibling of The Cardigans with a flair for the Metric, Emily Haines dramatics. Best description I have. “Albatross” is a great track and makes the album download worth the listen.

Band of the Day (8.25.10) Glasser

25 Aug

BOD (8.25.10) Glasser

Glasser is LA based Cameron Mesirow (with help from her boyfriend Foreign Born’s vocalist Matt Popieluch). She has a knack for layering world sounds under her Bjork pitch. She’s more than just a voice, she writes, creates and is the embodiment of her music. Even the name Glasser, came from a midnight vision of a figure hovering over water. Her music isn’t heart-wrenching, it’s big, bold and complex. The only comparison I can make is that of Bjork or Emily Haines maybe sometimes I hear a little Kate Bus. I hope you enjoy “Home” and “Apply” please follow her before she becomes too famous.

“Home”

“Apply” – I even hear a bit of Siouxsie Sioux in this track

HEAR IT: (7.6.10) THE MYNABIRDS – “LET THE RECORD GO”

If Carole King was part of the Indie scene, floating around Echo Park, visiting Beck for a Record Club evening, this is what she would sound like. Add a little Emily Haines sprinkled with Swift’s piano, drum arrangement and you have a beautiful track.
