Best New Bands of 2010 Hummingbird Award: #12 Memoryhouse

Memoryhouse is so good, she actually gave me chills the first time I listened. I love The xx for one reason, it’s that simple solo guitar that intros Romy Madley Croft’s vocals. I find that so alluring and it really draws the emotion of the vocals. Memoryhouse is Guelph, Ontario’s Evan Abeele, classically trained and Denise Nouvion’s photographic mind, melded together to form a soulful Beach House/My Bloody Valentine.

Vitals:
Members: Evan Abeele and Denise Nouvion
Hometown: Guleph, Ontario CN
Sonic Soulmates: The xx, Beach House, My Bloody Valentine
Tracks of the Year:
“”Sleep Patterns” – Simple guitars, electronic drum beats and Denise’s beautiful vocals.

“To The Lighthouse” – My favorite song off the EP and I really think it will make our 2010 Top 10…lovely tracks.

Band of the Day (11.22.10) Memoryhouse

BOD (11.22.10) Memoryhouse

With the success of Florence and The Machine, there will be a slew of new female led, drama queens hitting the scene. Unfortunately, every single one will be compared to the “Oh I wish I was Siouxsie Sioux” vocals standards. I think our team at NBD has profiled at least 60 bands that I would consider far more inventive and stylish to that of Florence. Today is definitely one of those days.

They don’t conjure sadness, but rather a sense of passion. They make me want to create. Their simple electronic drum beats never seem Yacht-like, or campy, they are better than The xx and I think you’ll find their music a great accompaniment to the blustery winter weather. Denise’s voice will warm your heart as your bearing the snowy winter doldrums. I think we’ll add them to the mainstage of our Inukshuk Festival

“Sleep Patterns” – Simple guitars, electronic drum beats and Denise’s beautiful vocals.

“To The Lighthouse” – My favorite song off the EP and I really think it will make our 2010 Top 10…lovely tracks.

Band of the Day (9.10.10) Young Governor

Band of the Day (9.10.10) Young Governor

Ahhh Canada is back and this time it’s in the form of a Fucked Up band member and a smash your face in rock sound. I never get sick of good rock music. Yeah Ben Cook’s vocals sound a little like Alex Turner or even more Britt Daniel of Spoon. It’s good shit and I think it’s time Ben Cook stop with the projects and stick with Young Governor. Love this shit.

Hear:
“Virginia Creeper”

Here is the GUVLUVMixtapeVol.1 – Dude I grabbed my skateboard, slipped on the Chukka boots and destroyed the streets with this on my walkman. This is good good stuff.

Band of the Day: (7.19.10) PS I Love You

19 Jul No I love you more!

BOD: (7.19.10) PS I Love You

The Maple Leaf rises again. Seriously, out of 100+ bands posted, I think 50% of them are from Canada. PS I Love You, from Kingston, Ontario was originally a fun little side project for Paul Saulnier. The PS of PS I Love You. After futzing around for years in Country Rock bands, Paul needed an outlet. PS I Love You recruited Benjamin Nelson in 2006 and hit the ground running with strong guitar riffs, sounds like 2-3 to me, a Casio and quirky tracks that kept the people coming back to the shows. Country rock, coupled with strong guitar riffs and off key but in-tune vocals, make PS I Love You a BOD favorite. Really a great great Indie Rock band. Give them 60 minutes and an a stick of vinyl and they will kick your ass. Sound interestingly similar to early Pumpkin Gish recordings.

Now with a 7″ under their belt, they’re starting to tour outside of the Great White North. Splendid A-side “Facelove” will make you a fan immediately. Look for Meet at the Muster Station coming out in October. Take a listen below:
