The 4th Annual Hummingbirds – Best New Band of 2013

It’s been 12 months since we last spoke. Since the Hummingbird graced our presence and honored our 12 2012 BEST NEW BANDS. What are the Hummingbird Awards you ask? Well they are the DEFINITIVE AWARDS for the BEST NEW BAND OF THE YEAR. We’re on year four and we’re loving. Who are we? We are two passionate dudes who love their music, kids, wives and lives. We do this for fun, but we still buy vinyl, CDs and magazines. Why? Because we care about the music and the bands that create. Music is the subtext to life and when I think back on my life’s greatest moments I have visions of happiness, sadness and whatever, but it’a all accompanied with a soundtrack. We know you have it too or you wouldn’t be here to read our blog.

So who have launched? In 2010 it was Best Coast and Tennis, In 2011 it was Other Lives and I Heart Sharks, In 2012 it was Haim and Alt-J. We might be way toooo early on a band like in 2010 Phantogram or way too late on Lana Del Rey or just in time for Foals. All in all it doesn’t matter. If you’ve kept up with us then you’ve been blessed with great music.

Band of the Day (1.4.11) – No Joy

Ahhhh Day 2 of this new year and why not focus on walls of sound and shoegaze or as the band describes “doomgaze” pop. The Elizabeth Fraser layered vocals eerily remind you of the angelic voice rattling around inside your head. She’s alluring but disruptive, making you feel as if your safe in her arms, then she whispers those insane lyrics in your head. WOW, she may even be an Incubus…okay, I’m getting carried away, but you get the drift. Take a listen to our two favorite tracks below. After you listen…realize it’s only a duo. They did befriend Bethany of Best Coast and get a coattail ride on her label, so there is familial love here and you will be seeing their name on the SXSW/summer festival circuit.

So this is it. The final post of 2010 and it’s MY list of albums. Yeah that’s right, an entire ALBUM. That’s what bands and artists do, they go into the studio and create a record for us to enjoy. The art of crafting a story and telling it to us through poems, notes and melodies. I love a record because it’s what makes a band. Nobody would read a chapter of a book and say that an author is great, you need the whole art form. An album tells you the story of a band, not a track. These are the albums that changed MY world in 2010. Albums ONLY from the bands that debuted in 2010. Some of our favorite bands only released EPs…boohoo, hopefully 2011 will give us records from these bands. Damn it’s been a great year musically. We posted the Top 20 Bands of 2010 and gave them The Hummingbird Award, we posted Arizona Turks favorite gems from 2010, now I’m posting my Gems, the songs, the ones that will forever stay on my shelf to admire. You listened to a ton of our tracks from the best new bands, but these were your faves as well. I challenge you to find a year where there were 10 tracks better than this!!! Wow.

Best New Bands of 2010 Hummingbird Award: #6

Bethany Cosentino is Best Coast and she makes me feel good inside. We fell in love with her back in April. She can grind it out on her electric guitar, or break your heart with her vocals. Think Jenny Lewis with a vendetta to crush you. Her album was one of the best of the year and her summer track “All Summer” for Converse with Kid Cudi is our #1 track of the year. She will be here for a long, long time. Crazy For You is instantly likable and a good album, I love it as much as I did back in June. It’s definitely lasted the test of time. It’s shocking that 2010 was her debut year. We love you Beth and we’re so happy that you were our first BOD @New.Band.Day

“Boyfriend” – When she’s by herself, you’ve gotta love the grind. Another Top 10 track of 2010.
