Band of the Day (8.24.10) Still Corners

24 Aug

BOD (8.24.10) Still Corners

Still Corners remind me of the early 80’s 4AD artists like Cocteau Twins and Dead Can Dance. First off, the vocals are angelic, dual harmonies create the rebirth of dream-pop queen Elizabeth Fraser. Fraser was a master of floating lyrics that grabbed your heartstrings without saying a thing. I don’t know what language she sang in, but it was the effortless airy vocals that made you cry every time. Fraser could sing my shopping list at the grocery store and I would cry. Still Corners is a special creation. Their dreamy London sound is made to break your heart. Enjoy two tracks and please please please download their new EP from BandCamp.

Hear: I posted two magnificent tracks, but if I were to suggest their best song…grab “Wish” here. It’s Swell Season meets The Cranberries, meets Elizabeth Fraser in 1:40 of perfection.

“Don’t Fall In Love” – Because break-ups are awful…maybe this track is a cool pillow to fall on when your heart is broken.

“Endless Summer” – The song that will make them famous.

Band of the Day (8.9.10) Yuck or Yu(c)k

9 Aug Brits rule with simplicity and proper XX/XY duos.

BOD: (8.9.10) Yuck or Yu(c)k

I’ve been looking forward to this day all year. It’s 8.9.10 damnit and we only get 12 years to enjoy this perfect symmetry. Today is extra special because we go double-digits….so I thought long and hard about an appropriate BOD. Someone who represents the symmetry…so here comes Yuck. I’ve listened to approximately four tracks and I quite honestly think they nail what XX/XY duos stand for….I love you, you dumped me, I hate you, I forgive you, etc. Their voices sound perfect together, they beam with emotion, almost as if they’re lying in bed singing to each other. Surprisingly, Yuck is a big band — Daniel Blumberg (guitar), Max Bloom (guitar), Jonny Rogoff (drums), Mariko Doi (bass) and Ilana Blumberg (vocals) make the complexity of music, sound so damn simple and perfect. “Automatic” is so pure I can almost hear the dust fly off the piano wires after each plunk. But when you dig deeper you realize that this simplicity is much bigger, tracks like “Georgia” introduce you to their Dinosaur Jresque roots. I love ’em and I think you will too. The two tracks posted below are my faves.

Yuck hail from Northern London, a few members have been seen on the scene, Max and Danny were in Cajun Dance Party (CDP) back in 2007. A classic hyped, British fave back in the 2007.

The Week in Review (7.31.10)

1 Aug

Listen to the Jim Jones RevueHow was your week? Mine was fantastic, I found five new bands that made my day and now I’m hoping they make your week or even your month. One of my favorite bands possibly for year was introduced this week. Enjoy the music.

If you’d like to receive MP3’s from our “Week in Review” via email, please sign-up to receive our email updates. Send me your email address or use the submission box on the right hand side of this page. Thanks for following us and we hope you’ve found your new favorite band.

Monday (7.26.10) Sisters, Aaron Pfannnebecker on Vocals, Guitars and Matt Conboy on Drums, Keyboards. They stack up the amps and pile drive their sound similar to early Husker Du and Dinosaur Jr. Malkmusesque. Brooklyn is home to Sisters

Sisters – “Highway Scratch”

Tuesday (7.27.10) The Jim Jones Revue This is the band of the month for me. I love them and so will you. It’s the wailing guitar, coupled with the banging piano and Jim’s screaming and wailing at top octane. Blues guitar, slapping piano and classic 60′s soul. I hope you enjoy them as much as me. If someone gave Little Richard some rage you’d have JJR. The boys are from London, but I believe Alabama is where their roots lie.

The Jim Jones Revue – “Hey Hey Hey Hey”

Wednesday (7.28.10) Amen Dunes – This is a timeless piece of music and am thoroughly impressed by Damon McMahon’s ability to make his sound both classic and modern. HEAR “Murder Dull Minds” to really get the best of what Amen Dunes can offer. Damon is from Brooklyn, NY now in Beijing.

Amen Dunes – “Murder Dull Minds”

Thursday (7.29.10) Frankie Rose and The Outs – If you’re a fan of Vivian Girls, Crystal Stilts and the Dum Dum Girls, then you’re a fan of Frankie Rose. Her stick thumping was and is the driving force behind them. Now, she’s stepping off the stool to get behind the mic to help lead The Outs. “Little Brown Haired Girls” is such an amazing track, conjuring up so many great recent female indie led bands.

Friday (7.30.10) FUTUREBIRDS – Athens, GA is back and they bring us FUTUREBIRDS. It’s an amazing array of instruments played by talented musicians all coming together for one sole cause…great music. The spacey folk is so good and unique, please please listen to “Johnny Utah” it’s sooooo so nice on this hottt summer day.

Band of the Day: (7.27.10) THE JIM JONES REVUE

27 Jul

BOD: (7.27.10) THE JIM JONES REVUE

I’ve been waiting two weeks to post the BOD story about The Jim Jones Revue. I swear the first time I heard them I thought someone ripped some vinyl from a 1965 classic that was missed by the masses. I listened again and didn’t hear any popping, I just heard something new that should have been and could have been the best rock/soul record of it’s time. So It’s now time we declare this as the best rock/soul record ever??? I don’t know if we can say that, but seriously, I love it and think you will too. Please be careful if you listen to it on headphones, be prepared for it to hurt your ears.

A little background on the boys from London. The band members JIM JONES : VOCALS / GUITAR, RUPERT ORTON : GUITARS, ELLIOT MORTIMER : PIANO, GAVIN JAY : BASS, NICK JONES : DRUMS claim to be in the punk/blues vain. I really really really beg you to just listen, close your eyes and imagine being in a smokey run down bar a little north of Mobile, AL circa 1964. Really it’s the band of the month for me, blows through all of them. It’s the wailing guitar, coupled with the banging piano and Jim’s screaming and wailing at top octane. Blues guitar, slapping piano and classic 60’s soul. I hope you enjoy them as much as me. If someone gave Little Richard some rage you’d have JJR.

Hear:
“Cement Mixer” – Dear God, this track will rock you. The build-up is out of this world then it delivers the punch to your gut.

“Elemental”

SAVED THE BEST OF LAST:
“Hey Hey Hey Hey” – This is their best track. BY FAR!

And if I’d convinced you to love this band…Daytrotter rules…free download of The Jim Jones Revue Session

Band of the Day – (7.22.10) SLOW CLUB

22 Jul Brits XX/XY duo kinda rock

BOD: (7.22.10) SLOW CLUB

Was everyone getting nervous? Listening to innovative songs in Spanish, can be uncomfortable for many, but if you close your eyes, imagine the heat, grab a cold drink and just relax. I bet your Indie rock shell will crack and your ears will thank you. So today I take you back to the comfortable place of XX/XY duos. Acoustic guitars, birds chirping, we’re in love, we break up and now we’re back together. Create a cool band name, buy a drum machine, make t-shirts, get into a SXSW showcase, make the Facebook page and you’re in. Oh but here comes the uncomfortable part….SLOW CLUB actually takes traditional folk Omaha sounds and then rocks with electric guitars. It’s much like what Sleigh Bells did to The XX or The White Stripes did to The Carpenters. Slow Club does to Edward Sharpe. They actually sound better when they rock.

Brits who share lead, King and Queen perhaps? The band is made up of Charles Watson and Rebecca Taylor. The band also incorporates crazy percussion instruments, glasses, chairs, etc. Love their dynamic and their ability to bang on the drums, wail a vocal and kick in the guitar. I feel like it’s a perfect Back to School sound. End of Summer, much bigger feel than two people.

HEAR:
“Giving Up On Love”

“Giving Up On Love” MP3

“It Doesn’t Have to Be Beautiful” – Follows a really nice Saddlecreek Folk sound…Tilly and the Wall maybe? Edward Sharpish…

“Our Most Brilliant Friends”

“Christmas TV” – They can also tug at your heartstrings…

HEAR IT: (7.13.10) CIVIL CIVIC – “RUN OVERDRIVE”/”LESS UNLESS”/”F*CK YOUTH”

13 Jul

HEAR IT: (7.13.10) CIVIL CIVIC – “RUN OVERDRIVE”

I really like this song, no exaggerating, this is a great reason to TURN up your device to extra LOUD and the 2:30 blues will go away. The clean 80’s bass line, the tight drum box coupled with big big big electronica sound is remarkable. I love this track.

This track “Less Unless’ is all over the web, download it directly from this player. I like “Run Overdrive” better, but this is a great track.

“F*ck Youth” is a little rougher, but my 2:30am just became 1:00am with the boys. Great representation.

Band of the Day: (7.13.10) CIVIL CIVIC

13 Jul REM wish they were this cool

BOD: (7.13.10) CIVIL CIVIC

I took myself off the comfortable path of retro 50’s pop, The Pet Sound, beard bands and jumped over back to 2009 where retro minimalist 80’s rock was on the rise. The XX stormed onto the scene, sold out to The Olympics and left our ears searching for animal harmonies. I was searching for today’s BOD and couldn’t help jumping back to 80’s retro rock with clap machines, tight drums and kick ass clean bass riffs. The limited vocals don’t bother me, actually I’ve had them on all morning and I find that I am far more productive without vocals. Hence the long blog posting. Civil Civic bring clean KROQ sounds with limited vocals, but incredibly strong, tight 80’s riffs.

I won’t dump Civil Civic into the 80’s “tryin it again” pile, I will tell you that they’ve reinvented the sound and it makes me feel good. Not everything is derivative of the last and someone can make great music without being accused of being a thief. Here’s to being an innovator. The boys are from The UK, they claim Big Brain Electronica…much agreed
