Band of the Day (11.22.10) Memoryhouse

22 Nov

BOD (11.22.10) Memoryhouse

With the success of Florence and The Machine, there will be a slew of new female led, drama queens hitting the scene. Unfortunately, every single one will be compared to the “Oh I wish I was Siouxsie Sioux” vocals standards. I think our team at NBD has profiled at least 60 bands that I would consider far more inventive and stylish to that of Florence. Today is definitely one of those days.

Memoryhouse is so good, she actually gave me chills the first time I listened. I love The xx for one reason, it’s that simple solo guitar that intros Romy Madley Croft’s vocals. I find that so alluring and it really draws the emotion of the vocals. Memoryhouse is Guelph, Ontario’s Evan Abeele, classically trained and Denise Nouvion’s photographic mind, melded together to form a soulful Beach House/My Bloody Valentine. They don’t conjure sadness, but rather a sense of passion. They make me want to create. Their simple electronic drum beats never seem Yacht-like, or campy, they are better than The xx and I think you’ll find their music a great accompaniment to the blustery winter weather. Denise’s voice will warm your heart as your bearing the snowy winter doldrums. I think we’ll add them to the mainstage of our Inukshuk Festival

Hear:
“Sleep Patterns” – Simple guitars, electronic drum beats and Denise’s beautiful vocals.

“To The Lighthouse” – My favorite song off the EP and I really think it will make our 2010 Top 10…lovely tracks.

Band of the Day (11.3.10) Bankrobber

3 Nov

BOD: (11.3.10) Bankrobber

It’s not a coincidence that Victoria’s Bankrobber shares the band name with The Clash’s famous track of the same name. The band shares the same diversity of sound and a sonic similarity with its vocals. Bankrobber has stumbled on a sound that is a step ahead of Vampire Weekend. I’ve only heard their BandCamp EP and I think these guys are the real deal. They may need to work on their harmonies a bit, but overall their songwriting is good, the arrangements are GREAT and the music has massive appeal. I love when they get folksy and add the reggae kick. Listen to their folk flavor, with banjos. Bankrobber is Blank, or just Jordan Minkoff if you want to go with the birth name. The five song EP MidJuly is available here.

Hear:
“May 11th” – Try not to tap your toe.

Download —> Bankrobber – “May 11th”

“Tripe” – Clash as Clash gets…love it though! Put Vampire Weekend and Clash in the studio and this is what you get!

Band of the Day (9.10.10) Young Governor

10 Sep

Band of the Day (9.10.10) Young Governor

Ahhh Canada is back and this time it’s in the form of a Fucked Up band member and a smash your face in rock sound. I never get sick of good rock music. Yeah Ben Cook’s vocals sound a little like Alex Turner or even more Britt Daniel of Spoon. It’s good shit and I think it’s time Ben Cook stop with the projects and stick with Young Governor. Love this shit.

Here is the GUVLUVMixtapeVol.1 – Dude I grabbed my skateboard, slipped on the Chukka boots and destroyed the streets with this on my walkman. This is good good stuff.

Band of the Day (8.18.10) His Clancyness

18 Aug Even if you saw him on the street you'd stop. Amazing

BOD (8.18.10) His Clancyness

He says he’s from Bologna, Italy or Ottawa, Canada. Either way he’s shrouded in mystery but he’s gaining in buzz. Jonathan Clancy is His Clancyness and he’s a super fuzzy lo-fi performer with spacey, hazy vocals. When he wants to, he can be a vocal doppelganger for Ben Bridewell of Band of Horses. Frankly, I try really hard to find bands on NBD that separate themselves from the pack. Clancy is unique in his approach to simple melodies, clean crisp major chords on a Taylor Acoustic guitar. I say he sounds like Bridewell just so you get a sense of his emotional pulse. He has a way of drawing you in and really tugging at your tear ducts on “How It’s Done in Italy” but then something happens on his other posted track. “Summer Majestic” kicks it up a notch with a drum machine beat that makes you wanna move a bit. He pulls off a nice chillwave track and he transforms himself into a fantastic New Wave Bauhaus/Love And Rockets Daniel Ash, proving the dude’s got some depth. Really impressed.

Give him a listen, buy his new EP Always Mist and follow the man. He’s worth it.

Band of the Day (8.17.10) The Acorn

17 Aug Canada owns it again. This time with the best new music to date

BOD (8.17.10)

The Acorn are one band that never leave my daily playlist since 2007. I’ve refused to share my favorite band, because sometimes I just want to keep things a secret. Well it wasn’t until this last weekend where I read this amazing review of The Acorn that I realized, I’m doing myself more harm than good by not sharing it with you. So here they are, the best new band of 2008, June & July & August. I won’t give them September yet.

The Acorn formed in Ottawa back in 2003, but 2007 was the first album that launched them to the forefront. They’re ambitious, mysterious and troubled. They’re soft pattering sounds, couple multiple acoustic guitars, brush drums and Rolf Klausener dented childhood. His mother, as profiled in their first album Glory Hope Mountain, barely survived birth, ran away from an abusive father and emigrated to Canada from Honduras.

Their newest album No Ghost is yet another gem. They recorded the album in a tiny little cottage in Ottawa, where they isolated themselves from the daily noise. The result is beautiful. They’ve embraced their Indie folk bones and the result is a cross between Travis, good U2, Vampire Weekend, Fleet Foxes layered with David Byrne vocals. My favorite track is “No Ghost” hear below.

They too will be on the NBD Inukshuk Festival line-up and yes they will be added to The Best New Bands of 2010…so far list.

Hear:
“No Ghost” – Title track from the new record. See above for the sonic similarities

“Flood Pt. 1” – From their debut album and a beauty of a track.

The band as profiled on MySpace:
Rolf Klausener: chirp
Jeff Debutte: neigh
T. Jeffrey Malecki : caw
Pat Johnson: cackle
Steven Lappano: bleat

Band of the Day (8.16.10) Emma-Lee

16 Aug Canada shines bright with Emma-Lee

BOD (8.16.10) Emma-Lee

It’s Monday morning and I was in the mood for something a little more emotional. Something a little out of character for me, but I puttered around the web and stumbled on this absolute beauty…Emma-Lee. Her album came out back in March 2009..I may be a little late to the game here, but I don’t care. She’s a Toronto native, one part Bonnie Raitt, one part Norah Jones, one part Chrissie Hynde and one part Rickie Lee Jones. She can sing with the electric guitars, full orchestras, or sound as if she’s recording in Nashville with a slide guitar. She makes the guitar sound better and she has a deep understanding of the music she loves. Even covers Skeeter Davis “The End of the World” in the YouTube video below. Her voice is sultry and big all at the same time, listen and follow please. She might even be a headliner at The NBD Inukshuk Festival.

Emma-Lee is accompanied by:
Devrim Eldelekli
Kevin Mendes
Mark McIntyre

Band of the Day (8.4.10) Land of Talk

4 Aug

Land of Talk is Canadian….pause….pause….from Montreal….pause…pause…they sound like Metric and Sonic Youth…pause…pause…why are you still reading, listen to their tracks below. They’ve been at it since 2006 and yes another kick a$$ Canadian band. Don’t BS yourself into thinking that you have them pegged as a female led rock band. No they have fantastic pop production and a sound that borders on the early days of Garbage. No it’s not the overproduced Butch Vig, it’s the well crafted Butch Vig of Smashing Pumpkins Gish. simply put a female led rock band that has diversity, depth and a soothing lead vocalist in Lizzie Powell. Joseph Yarmush and Andrew Barr beat on the drums and pluck away to bring you another Canadian band worthy of massive US love. They’re on Saddle Creek, so the big US label deal is in place, a new album Cloak and Cipher, hits US stores on 8.24 and it’s now our job to spread their love all across the web. If you love Emily Haines, then please listen to “May You Never” and I think you’ll find Land of Talk your new fave.

Take a listen to two tracks to give you a sense of their attention to detail.

Band of the Day (7.23.10) KARKWA

23 Jul French mood rock.

BOD: (7.23.10) KARKWA

It’s Karkwa. Heard of them? No…well it’s okay, they’re a little obscure to us down here in the US of A. I stumbled on them on Sirius this morning.

I feel badly about making Karkwa band of the day being that they are 12 years old. But it’s passionate fans like us that might make that 12 year commitment pay off. Louis-Jean Cormier, François Lafontaine, Martin Lamontagne, Julien Sagot, Stéphane Bergeron have put in the time now give them 3:00 minutes of your precious life. I promise you’ll love it. The band’s name is a phonetic rendering of carquois (French for a quiver of arrows). Oh they’re from Montreal and they sing in French and they just nail that East Coast Canada sound. Think The Arcade Fire, with a splash of Sigur Ros, a dash of Volcano Choir and sprinkle of Radiohead. They’ve evolved over the years, but they just have a nice big bhttps://newbandday.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit.phpand sound with layered vocals, strings, acoustic guitars, pianos…all of it. Don’t be surprised if you see them at a Festival near you. They will be a headliner at Inukshuk. They are once again a favorite to win the Polaris Prize in 2010.

Band of the Day (7.20.10) – BEND SINISTER

20 Jul Vancouver's Very Own Maestros

BOD (7.20.10) – BEND SINISTER

Seriously, I’m not moving to Canada, I’m not even visiting Canada, but could someone please explain why their music is so darn good? I may move there, hell I might get married there and then throw the biggest frigging festival of music Canada has ever seen. I’m going to invite every band I love from NewBandDay, give away free picks in the shape of a maple leaf and let the good times roll. I’m gonna have it in Banff and call it Inukshuk.Because as the Inukshuk guided the ancients to dry land, so does Canadian music. I am a believer. Every new Canadian band featured on New.Band.Day is invited to the festival and we will now be call them Inukshukian.

It’s time to recognize the band Bend Sinister, formed in 2001 and began playing as many bar shows as they possibly could in their home town of Kelowna, British Columbia. They moved to Vancouver, BC cocooned, shed band members like Mike Magnusson, Kevin Keegan, Dan Goughnour, Dave Buck, Edo Van Breemen, Jon Bunyan (stage name), Naben Ruthnum and released 3LPs and 1EP. Now 2010, Dan Moxon, Jason Dana, Joel Myers, Henry Alcock White and Joseph Blood bring the Nabakov named songmeisters to the forefront.

Their single “Things Will Get Better” is a beautiful twist of ELO, Queen guitar riffs, 70’s Elton John/Billy Joel, a little Phoenix and should be featured in a Charlie Kaufman film. I love it. I’ve attached the five song Spring Romance from the band. Might just be my new favorite band of the month….

Band of the Day: (7.19.10) PS I Love You

19 Jul No I love you more!

BOD: (7.19.10) PS I Love You

The Maple Leaf rises again. Seriously, out of 100+ bands posted, I think 50% of them are from Canada. PS I Love You, from Kingston, Ontario was originally a fun little side project for Paul Saulnier. The PS of PS I Love You. After futzing around for years in Country Rock bands, Paul needed an outlet. PS I Love You recruited Benjamin Nelson in 2006 and hit the ground running with strong guitar riffs, sounds like 2-3 to me, a Casio and quirky tracks that kept the people coming back to the shows. Country rock, coupled with strong guitar riffs and off key but in-tune vocals, make PS I Love You a BOD favorite. Really a great great Indie Rock band. Give them 60 minutes and an a stick of vinyl and they will kick your ass. Sound interestingly similar to early Pumpkin Gish recordings.

Now with a 7″ under their belt, they’re starting to tour outside of the Great White North. Splendid A-side “Facelove” will make you a fan immediately. Look for Meet at the Muster Station coming out in October. Take a listen below:

Watch It: (7.2.10) KILL THE LIGHTS – “Arctic at Dawn”

2 Jul

Watch it: (7.2.10) KILL THE LIGHTS – Artic At Dawn – Brings the best of 80’s Joy Division guitars whining and wailing with the spacey overdubbed harmonies of Alex and Steph. I love the clean bass line. A really nice display of how this sound will be the big thing. Much love for this band.

Band of the Day: (7.2.10) KILL THE LIGHTS

2 Jul Canada's finest

BOD: (7.2.10) KILL THE LIGHTS – Montreal isn’t just home to the world’s most diverse population or the most successful NHL franchise, it’s home to a sound, a vibe, a feeling that is bigger than one might think. The Arcade Fire have conquered the world, and as they continue to age gracefully, a fresh sound erupts from their hometown. Kill The Lights, is a former three piece band, founded in 2005, who discovered that if they added a few more members…melody, harmonies and complicated overlays will enhance the overall sound.

As the release of Fog Area, and the most recent release, June 8th, 2010 of the session EP Pink Dog, the band is starting to get noticed. They’ve toured, fought, destroyed a few moose and after it all a new band has released. I hope you’ll give them a listen, it’s well worth the 3:00 minutes. Peace.

HEAR IT: (7.1.10) MATHEMAGIC – “Breaststroke”

1 Jul

HEAR IT: (7.1.10) MATHEMAGIC – I think it’s a perfect summer track. Made for the beach tent, dawn with your loved one and one blanket as you watch the sun go down. It’s dreamy, spacey and a good good next stage of The Pet Sound…I am coining that term for all bands that use The Beach Boys “Pet Sounds” sound…
