Band of the Day (9.6.10) Broken Water

6 Sep

BOD (9.6.10) Broken Water

Holy shat these guys are fantastic. I’m not the biggest garage rock, fuzzed out, dirty guy. But if you’ve been reading NBD long enough, you’ll notice that if the band is great, they’ll get their due. Broken Water is Nirvana meets shoegaze. They’re Olympia’s finest new specimen of whir, fuzz and dirty, amplified guitars coupled with echoed vocals. They’re not some PacNoWest rip-off band. They’re inventive and super cool. Super cool in the way they weave in and out of the heavy. They use the reverb as a way to spray emotion on you, but they pull back to the clean guitars and Abigail’s vocals just in time to prevent a complete overload. It’s a great threesome organization and they are well deserving of the props. Thank you to Arizona Turk for turning me onto these guys.

Band:
They formed in 2008 and seem to be residing in several bands up in the Olympia area. SISTERS, Oly’s Congratualtions, etc.

kanako-drums/vocals
abigail-bass/vocals
jon-guitar/vocals

Hear:
“Memory” – It’s Nirvana guitar riffs, Cobain stylings, but I would compare this track most to Dinosaur Jr. F’n love it.

“Dead Light” – It’s dark and haunting, but not droney. It’s got enough grit and grime to make you feel dirty, but Abigail’s vocals clean you up to show to the parents.

Band of the Day (9.2.10) Dark Dark Dark

2 Sep

BOD (9.2.10) Dark Dark Dark

Most of the time, Minneapolis means a chilly trip to visit some buyer at Best Buy. Now I have reason to celebrate, catching a live show from Dark Dark Dark. They’re established with some roots in the self-proclaimed “Chamber Folk/Indie” space. What I gather, is that means loads of instruments, small recording spaces and chillingly awesome vocals. Take a listen to the two tracks below, I love Nona’s vocals and I think you’ll find they’re not another Montreal want-to-be. They’re classic and inventive. Familiar and new. Listen and pre-order the new LP. Nona is a beautiful cross between Zee Avi and Fiona. Thanks again to my Music Muse for this great find.

Band:
Marshall LaCount, Nona Marie Invie, Jonathan Kaiser, Todd Chandler, Walter McClements, Brett Bullion, Mark Trecka

Hear:
“In Your Dreams” – World sounds coupled with Fiona Apple vocals. Tapping pianos turn this track into something special.

Band of the Day (8.30.10) Paper Crows

30 Aug

BOD (8.30.10) Paper Crows

Paper Crows is the London synth duo Emma Panas and Duncan McDougall. They’re a mix of Kate Bush, a bolder XX and Portishead. I’ve got the only three tracks I can find on every playlist. They met at music college in Killburn and they started recording in hidden session in Duncan’s bedroom. If this is what they create hidden in a loft, what will we get with a studio recording?

They’re current tagline….
Stop. Revive. Survive. I’ll add Repeat.

They are really one of the best new bands hitting. I can’t believe they only have three tracks.

Hear:
“Stand Alight” – I posted the SoundCloud tracks because the original is sooooo good. Please listen.

Band of the Day (8.25.10) Glasser

25 Aug

BOD (8.25.10) Glasser

Glasser is LA based Cameron Mesirow (with help from her boyfriend Foreign Born’s vocalist Matt Popieluch). She has a knack for layering world sounds under her Bjork pitch. She’s more than just a voice, she writes, creates and is the embodiment of her music. Even the name Glasser, came from a midnight vision of a figure hovering over water. Her music isn’t heart-wrenching, it’s big, bold and complex. The only comparison I can make is that of Bjork or Emily Haines maybe sometimes I hear a little Kate Bus. I hope you enjoy “Home” and “Apply” please follow her before she becomes too famous.

Hear:
“Home”

“Apply” – I even hear a bit of Siouxsie Sioux in this track

Band of the Day (8.24.10) Still Corners

24 Aug

BOD (8.24.10) Still Corners

Still Corners remind me of the early 80’s 4AD artists like Cocteau Twins and Dead Can Dance. First off, the vocals are angelic, dual harmonies create the rebirth of dream-pop queen Elizabeth Fraser. Fraser was a master of floating lyrics that grabbed your heartstrings without saying a thing. I don’t know what language she sang in, but it was the effortless airy vocals that made you cry every time. Fraser could sing my shopping list at the grocery store and I would cry. Still Corners is a special creation. Their dreamy London sound is made to break your heart. Enjoy two tracks and please please please download their new EP from BandCamp.

Hear: I posted two magnificent tracks, but if I were to suggest their best song…grab “Wish” here. It’s Swell Season meets The Cranberries, meets Elizabeth Fraser in 1:40 of perfection.

“Don’t Fall In Love” – Because break-ups are awful…maybe this track is a cool pillow to fall on when your heart is broken.

“Endless Summer” – The song that will make them famous.

Band of the Day (8.23.10) Ferraby Lionheart

23 Aug Be prepared for a fantastic singer/songwriter/heartbreaker

BOD (8.23.10) Ferraby Lionheart

Two albums, one EP, a stint as the lead of Telecast, an onstage call-out by Jon Brion and Ferraby Lionheart is finally about to break. It’s taken seven years for this Nashville native heartbreaker to reach the “I’m About to Break” stage of his career, but oh how lucky we are to get a chance to hear him as he’s on the rise. His new album The Jack of Hearts has been well received by the Indie press. He’s since moved to LA so I have a sense that in two years, he’ll be doing duets with Emmylou Harris, touring the Grand Ole Opry and on the “A” stage of every summer festival. I’m just glad I found him before it was too late. His sonic similarity lie somewhere between Rufus Wainwright and Travis, with a drop of Morrissey. His arrangements are borderline 50’s crooner with a mix of John Lennon tambourine/drum strokes. See him on tour with the Watson Twins.

Hear:
“Arkansas” – It’s the tragic 50’s song, kid travels back home to find his kin only to discover Dad is locked up. His voice is amazing here and I love the harmonies.

Band of the Day (8.20.10) Gauntlet Hair

20 Aug

BOD (8.20.10) Gauntlet Hair

Lafayette, CO is not the original home of South Park, no it’s the official birthplace of your new favorite band Gauntlet Hair. Andy R. and Craig Nice, who began making music together when they were 15, seem to have found a groove and we are so very lucky to be able to hear their success. They have The Pet Sound, but they are so much better than the others who attempt it. They are two guys who make layered guitars sound amazing because they add ummmph. Yeah, they make music with power, not sleeping pills. I think they’ve created a whole new approach to today’s sound. They have more of a New Wave approach then the Animal Collective bunch, which gives them an early U2 Boy sound. At first sound, they really have a sonic similarity to Surfer Blood, but there seems to be more depth and I think you’ll be glad you came to NBD today. I’m so glad I stumbled on these guys, because I think you’ll love em. Give em a whirl down below.

Hear:
“I Was Thinking” – I’ve read a good load of blogs about GH and it’s alarming how many people love this track. I admit it’s pretty darn good.

Band of the Day (8.12.10) Hotel Mexico

12 Aug Kyoto's Best New Music and part of The Pet Sound

BOD: (8.12.10) Hotel Mexico

Hotel Mexico is from Kyoto, Japan. Seriously kick ass Japanese Indie rock, guitar riffs comparable to Boris, with less Satan and more layered dance sounds. Space age samples coupled with breathy English vocals and MGMT guitar tracks make Hotel Mexico my favorite NEW BAND. I downloaded the entire new album His Jewelled Letter Box , and can’t get enough of the track I posted below. I admit it, I’m hooked. To make it easy I posted the You Tube video so you can hear portions of the entire album.

Band of the Day (8.10.10) DANNIELRADALL

10 Aug

BOD: (8.10.10) DannielRadall

If I said Lo-fi/Experimental what would you say? Brooklyn? Silverlake? How about Guadalajara, México….well here comes DannielRadall. His sounds are in the clouds, spacey and mesmerizing almost like the late 90’s sounds from Air, Chicane, etc. Take that sound, bolt on classic 80’s samples and you have the perfect summer sound. Chillwave is not his sound, he’s defined his own soundscape and we love it. When DannielRadall attacks the sound he makes it current and emotional. There’s depth of sound.

The Week in Review (8.7.10)

8 Aug

10 Tracks/5 Bands/The Week in Review is Here.
I love new music, A week of three LA bands, more Canadians, revivalists, sad stories and an artist that will be massively huge. I’m trying to put all of the tracks into one set so you can listen to them together. Maybe your new favorite band is here? Let me know. Enjoy the music.

If you’d like to receive MP3′s from our “Week in Review” via email, please sign-up to receive our email updates. Send me your email address or use the submission box on the right hand side of this page. Thanks for following us and we hope you’ve found your new favorite band.

Monday (8.2.10) Lord Huron By far the most eccentric band of the week, month and maybe even year. He’s an LA dude with very little information available. He will be huge and he is one of my favorites. I assure you that you’ll love him.
Tuesday (8.3.10) JOGGER Jogger are Amir Yaghmai and Jonathan Larroquette, from Los Angeles, CA with a sound that is so diverse that at one moment your spacing out to a Ratatat beat, then pulling back your headphones from death metal mayhem then you cruise in for a smooth landing with Erland Oyesque vocals.
Wednesday (8.4.10) Land of Talk Metric meets Butch Vig in a back alley in Montreal and they create a record so pure and so clean that you’ll fall in love instantly. Land of Talk is a seasoned Canadian band and they deserve US love.
Thursday (8.5.10) Fitz & The TantrumsLA based Fitz & The Tantrums are good ‘ol revival rock with an authentic analog sound and vocals that come from the heart.
Friday (8.6.10) Perfume Genius Perfume Genius, Mike Hadreas, is no exception to this rule. He is a Seattle native with a soft, fragile voice backed simply by a piano and lo-fi echoes. His songs stammer in minor chords and reflect on suicide, depression and loss. The amazing thing is that through the gray, you see his ability to spray one ray of sunshine.

5 Aug LA scensters give new meaning to 60's revivalism

BOD (8.5.10) Fitz and the Tantrums

The hipster scene is an ever evolving landscape. It’s hard to track what the speakeasy crowd is doing or following. Fedora’s were so 2008, Chuck Taylor’s were so 2009 and 60’s revival rock is so right now. I can’t escape the MP3’s in my inbox that sound like something I would have heard in 1967. Today’s BOD is no exception. I was trying to find something ironic to say about this band, but simply put, LA based Fitz & The Tantrums are good ‘ol revival rock with an authentic analog sound and vocals that come from the heart. The piano, soul/gospel backing vocals and the male throttled love songs make Fitz a classic must have for 2010. Oh how I wish I lived during this time period. I love how vocals express sadness, not drum machines or a Mac. Fitz is as expressive as they come. Noelle is the epitome of a soulful vocalist. Wicks has a way of adding authenticity and King, Phillips and Ruzumma are the glue that make the analog/vinyl crowd proud.

I’ve posted two tracks for you to enjoy.

Band of the Day (7.26.10) Sisters

26 Jul Brooklyn is still cool, but it's a little cooler b/c of Sisters

BOD: (7.26.10) SISTERS

It’s amazing when two dudes can create so much noise you forget it’s just two people. Remember the first time you heard The White Stripes, you were probably convinced there was a bass player hiding behind Meg. To see rock duos live, you’re simply in ahh of their raw power. I don’t know what it is, but I can tell you that Sisters will be a massively huge band if they get the break. I believe it because it’s more than just noise you hear. It reminds me of Cobain a bit, when you finally got beyond the distortion, you could hear a guy in pain, struggling to get through everyday. Listen to Bleach again and ignore the noise and just listen to what he’s saying and how he says it. He’s in agony and his only catharsis was the stage and his listeners.

I now take you to Sisters, Aaron Pfannnebecker on Vocals, Guitars and Matt Conboy on Drums, Keyboards. They stack up the amps and pile drive their sound similar to early Husker Du and Dinosaur Jr. Malkmusesque. The sound is similar, but for all the noise it’s melodic and I truly believe Aaron has a lot to say. I haven’t met him, but I’d love to dig into it with him. They are labelmates (Narnack) with Iran, Langhorne Slim and Thee Oh Sees. They’re definitely going to break, so be the first to say you rocked it with them. Claim em now!!! I highly suggest listening to The Curse on their MySpace.
