Band of the Day: (7.13.10) CIVIL CIVIC

13 Jul REM wish they were this cool

BOD: (7.13.10) CIVIL CIVIC

I took myself off the comfortable path of retro 50’s pop, The Pet Sound, beard bands and jumped over back to 2009 where retro minimalist 80’s rock was on the rise. The XX stormed onto the scene, sold out to The Olympics and left our ears searching for animal harmonies. I was searching for today’s BOD and couldn’t help jumping back to 80’s retro rock with clap machines, tight drums and kick ass clean bass riffs. The limited vocals don’t bother me, actually I’ve had them on all morning and I find that I am far more productive without vocals. Hence the long blog posting. Civil Civic bring clean KROQ sounds with limited vocals, but incredibly strong, tight 80’s riffs.

I won’t dump Civil Civic into the 80’s “tryin it again” pile, I will tell you that they’ve reinvented the sound and it makes me feel good. Not everything is derivative of the last and someone can make great music without being accused of being a thief. Here’s to being an innovator. The boys are from The UK, they claim Big Brain Electronica…much agreed

Band of the Day: (7.12.10) CHIEF

12 Jul So. Cal Americana

BOD: (7.12.10) CHIEF

Santa Monica boys bring So-Cal Americana to the fold. I first heard them on World Cafe awhile back and they were truly an amazing band. They’re not, “trying to be” from So-Cal, they really are a twang heavy band. I like that about them, Evan Koga, Mike Moonves, Danny and Michael Fujikawa, bring sweet sounds on their debut EP called Night and Day . Their full-length will be out sometime in mid-August, but I suggest picking up the EP to get you started.

BAND OF THE DAY: (7.9.10) THE JAMESES

9 Jul Not LeBron, but Florida's finest James Trio.

BOD: (7.9.10) THE JAMESES

None of them are named James, but I thought it appropriate to discuss a new favorite band post LeBron day yesterday. And hey look they’re from Florida, Lake Palm at that…looks like So. Florida will be riddled with more Jameses than they can handle. Their first single is a kick ass tune and it’s a must listen 7″. They’re still not my favorite So. Florida, see Sweet Bronco, but it’s time we recognize that Interpol isn’t the only thing from So. Florida that makes sound that sells. It’s time for these labels to stand-up get on a plane to Ft. Lauderdale and watch these bands. Give Captured Tracks some credit for signing them for their 7″, this is also the label that’s signed Beach Fossils and Wild Nothing

LeBron is not the only James in So. Florida about to kick ass, it’s time to make The Jameses your new favorite band.

Band of the Day: (7.8.10) BEACH FOSSILS – Brooklyn’s Indie wunderkind brings spacey lo-fi to the mainstream

8 Jul Brooklyn One Man Show!

BOD: (7.8.10) – BEACH FOSSILS

One man army, Dustin Payseur delivers on his promise of bringing space-age lo-fi to the core of the Indie scene. So all the pubs claim he is a one man show, but let’s give credit to the rest of the band John Pena, Sennott Burke and Tommy Lucas. BF’s March self-titled LP, released on Captured Tracks, overdubs and drowns the vocals, while delivering clean crisp first wave guitar riffs. These tracks are perfect for summer surfing, late night hanging and a dreary drippy summer days lounging by the pool.

Band of the Day: (7.6.10) THE MYNABIRDS – Former Georgie James singer and Richard Swift bring great music

6 Jul BOD: 7.5.10

BOD: (7.6.10) THE MYNABIRDS – Blending the angelic voice of Laura Burhenn with Richard Swift’s characteristic 50’s pop sound, THE MYNABIRDS brings us this summers favorite new/old sound. Swift classically blends Tin Pan Alley age, Lee Perry and Jeff Buckley heart and soul with Laura’s vocal prowess. It’s a beautiful approach and it works…well.

Band of the Day: (7.2.10) KILL THE LIGHTS

2 Jul Canada's finest

BOD: (7.2.10) KILL THE LIGHTS – Montreal isn’t just home to the world’s most diverse population or the most successful NHL franchise, it’s home to a sound, a vibe, a feeling that is bigger than one might think. The Arcade Fire have conquered the world, and as they continue to age gracefully, a fresh sound erupts from their hometown. Kill The Lights, is a former three piece band, founded in 2005, who discovered that if they added a few more members…melody, harmonies and complicated overlays will enhance the overall sound.

As the release of Fog Area, and the most recent release, June 8th, 2010 of the session EP Pink Dog, the band is starting to get noticed. They’ve toured, fought, destroyed a few moose and after it all a new band has released. I hope you’ll give them a listen, it’s well worth the 3:00 minutes. Peace.

Band of the Day (7.1.10) MATHEMAGIC – Happy Canada Day!

1 Jul Canada Rules the Music World

BOD: (7.1.10) MATHEMAGIC – I love Canada Day…I’ve celebrated it several times in Banff, Vancouver and Calgary. It’s a great time, and it’s a dandy excuse for us to celebrate the fact that today’s best music is coming from the Great White North. Arts & Crafts introduced most of us stars and stripers to the scene with Broken Social Scene, Stars, Zeus, etc. It was Arcade Fire from Montreal that owned 2008, and now it’s Mathemagic who will blow your mind. On April 13th they released their Paper Bag EP and it’s wonderful.

Mathemagic is a collaboration of brothers Evan and Dylan Euteneier from Guelph Ontario. Their sonic similarity most resembles that of The Beach Boys, Animal Collective, Washed Out and even a little Toro y Moi.

Band of the Day: (6.30.10) Lost in the Trees

30 Jun Chapel Hill's Finest

BOD: (6.30.10) Lost in the Trees – Chapel Hill’s collective, captained by songwriter/composer Ari Picker merges classic American folk acoustics, with rising symphonies that will haunt you. At it since 2003, they will break you but softly land you on your pillow as they caress you to sleep with their swirling orchestra. It’s pure beauty.

Band of the Day – (6.29.10) TENNIS

29 Jun Mixed doubles anyone?

BOD (6.29.10) Tennis – The husband wife duo Patrick Riley and Alaina Moore, no not the former Laker coach, but the lead captain of this brilliant masterpiece of a band. The two decided to test their newly formed union, packed their duffles, left Denver, bought a boat and sailed the high seas of the North Atlantic. As their bond solidified, they discovered that a musical journal of their journey would be both hip and interesting. This travelogue is for our enjoyment and listening pleasure. It’s a Hemingway meets Buffet, meets Vampire Weekend, meets 50’s bubblegum pop. I love the blend of the organ and her eerily timeless vocals.

This impossible to Google band finds itself with only a lone MySpace page. visit it

Band of the Day (6.28.10) CHAPPO

28 Jun NYC duo Chappo

BOD – CHAPPO, the NYC duo is redefining your summer with their new EP Plastique Universe. Their garage sound brings some stiff competition to their sonic twins Band of Horses. Love the combo of driving force rock with indie sympathy.

BAND OF THE DAY (6.25.10) – STEVE MASON

25 Jun Heartbreakingly fantastic

Many of you know Steve Mason from that moment when Cusack declared his love for him in High Fidelty. The former Beta Band lead, takes on love and loss. His heartbreaking tales are sure to make that lonely evening more comforting. To know that someone is sharing in your pain is so nice. Enjoy his new album and the tracks I’ll post.

Band of the Day (6.24.10) – TAME IMPALA

24 Jun Tame Impala

Tame Impala departed from Perth in 2008, signed with Modular with one mission, bring us space age rock with Parker’s Lennon style vocals. It’s beauty is consistent and instantaneous. They belong in The Ark, that place where bands named after animals reside. Enjoy
